African Swine Fever

African Swine Fever or ASF, a hemorrhagic fever that causes high mortality in domestic pigs, has been devastating the swine industry since August 2019.

Implications:
Thousands of pigs have been killed as ASF reached outbreak levels in almost all of Luzon, parts of Mindanao and could spread to other areas nationwide if not checked. This translates to billions of losses in revenue for both big businesses and small farmers whose livestock represent their life investments.

Solution:
Acemmune, a hog supplement that’s proven not only to enhance pigs’ immune systems but also to improve overall performance of the animals. While there is currently no vaccine against the ASF virus, Acemmune, together with the enhanced Bio-Security measures, forced culling, disinfecting, and resting farms are the best approach to control and eliminate ASF.

 

What is African Swine Fever (ASF)?

RANCIDITY

The efficiency of feed utilization in the livestock and poultry species is highly dependent upon the quality of feeds. That’s why when the feeds are of poor quality the feed intake and nutrient absorption of animals are compromised. Poor quality feed can mean a lot of things and one of which is it being RANCID.

How does it occur?
Feed rancidity is predisposed by autoxidation which is defined as the reaction involving oxygen that leads to deterioration of fats and oils which form off-flavors and off-odors. As such, feeds that are off-flavored and off-odored induce reduced palatability which gives rise to more serious problems such as lesser feed intake, smaller weight gain, greater economic losses and worst, business failure.

Solution:
Challenges are made to be faced and one way of addressing this problem is by adding to the feed a unique blend of three highly effective, approved antioxidants: Butylated hydroxytoluene, Butylated hydroxyanisole and Ethoxyquin. The BEST antioxidant combination that can be found in OXIGARD®.

MYCOTOXINS AND TOXICITY

Toxic substances are almost ubiquitous in the environment. Thus, they are also more likely to be found in ingredients for animal feeds. Growth of commonly occurring filamentous fungi in feeds may result in production of toxins known as mycotoxins, which can cause a variety of ill effects in animals such as immunosuppression, reduced feed intake, feed refusal, poor feed conversion, reduced reproductive capacities, compromised growth, and worst, even death.

Implications:
Due to the out-spurt of these very serious dilemmas, a variety of physical, chemical, and biological methods to counteract mycotoxin problems have been made. Detoxification strategies for the contaminated feeds should be done to reduce or eliminate the adverse impacts of mycotoxin to improve feed safety and prevent economic losses. The most recent approach to the problem has been the addition to the animal’s diet of natural sorbents that sequester mycotoxins, reduce their gastrointestinal absorption, and avoid their toxic effects on livestock and toxin carry over in animal products.

Solution: Nothing but ZETOX® has these special features of being a natural sorbent with high affinity to bind toxins and of being a broad spectrum anti-fungal.
